It depends on the tooth, however, it should stop after couple of days.

Its not that bad. A little sore for a couple of days. Like you say they give you a prescription for some pain pills that will make that even go easier. Be sure and take those. I am certain that in three days you will scarcely notice it.

I had 3 done at once and i was so drugged i didn't feel a thing. i just took a sleeping pill and passed out. my lips and cheek and neck were all swollen, but it didn't hurt. not sure why you're having a tough time with it. sorry about that. but if it hurts too much just call up the dentist and i'm sure he will be able to give you something stronger for the pain. have a good one:)

I had one on a Tuesday… the tooth and gums hurt bad for the first day, and then I had jaw pain until the following Wed. It wasn't that bad (nothing that Advil couldn't take care of) The worst part was that my lip was raw on the side they did the root canal on from the instruments rubbing on it for 3 hours. *actually the most painful part was paying the $500 on top of what the insurance covered* Hope it doesn't hurt too long.

I've had a total of 4 root canals over 8 years.I have never had one hurt me……The technology is such that it shouldn't hurt………..Why?……..because there is no root to hurt.

It usually is uncomfortable for 24-48 hours after the root canal. You're looking for it to feel better and better. If by Monday it's not starting to improve, call your dentist and let them know.

See Justine's answer and in the meantime, sleep on an extra pillow to elevate your head. Sleep on the side that does NOT have a toothache. If that doesn't work, you can move to a recliner or the sofa so you can keep your head really elevated. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain. This might help you make it through the night until you can see a dentist.

I had two root canals and they will be my last. I had no pain after they were done, but they hurt like hell getting them done and took so long. I won't ever have another one done. So expensive and then you are suppose to have a crown put on that tooth within a year or it will crack and believe me they do, I lost half the tooth. But crowns cost as much as root canals.

I just had my first root canal today. It started bothering me a month ago and tried putting it off due to waiting for my dental insurance to kick in. I wasn’t able to wait as the pain was horrific the past few days. From talking to my Dad, all root canal pain is different. He has had some to where he suffered no pain at all afterwards and others to where the pain lasted a couple of days. I read that the reason you have pain after a root canal is there are still many nerves set lower than the dead or infected nerve that is removed during the root canal. This are agitated from tools touching on them during the procedure. My dentist told me I would probably have to continue taking vicodin for a few days because I will continue to suffer from some pain due to the drilling and grinding. He also so to continue with the antibiotics for a week to make sure the infection stays at bay because if infected, the pain will worsen. For me it has been worse at night. I would recommend taking a sleeping pill, ibuprofen for swelling, and sleep as elevated as possible to keep as little blood flow from flowing around the tooth. To be honest, the vicodin hasn’t touched the pain and I even doubled the dose. I don’t think there is much that can be done except time. Hopefully my dentist is correct on just a few days! But definitely continue with the antibiotic as a infection will cause extreme pain. i just hope the pain goes away soon as I have been dealing with excruciating pain for a month! I am very pleased with the outcome of the root canal. It didn’t hurt one bit during the procedure. Just the aftermath is what is troubling me! I’ve had back surgery, been burned while in the marine corps, and I think that tooth pain ranks highest on pain out of the three! Best of luck to all!

I had a root canal done last Wednesday. Today is Sunday and just left my denitist a message about the fucken pain. It won’t go away and I’m tired of popping pills many kind of pills for the pain as that Shmuk did not give me anything for the pain after the root canal. I sat in his chair for one hour and one half and just today it dawned on me to call him and ask him if he was finished with the root canal as I don’t know and I can’t really tell. I would say not, since the pain is still there. Though, I am not sure if it is the tooth or the gum where the pain is?
I’ve spent a small fortune and still I don’t feel I’m getting my monies worth. So how long does the pain of a root canal really suppose to last for? And when is the temporaty crown suppose to be put it? I come to you the general public as the dentist Dr. Elder Heras I was seeing in El Monte, CA has gone on vacation and left me no contact telephone number of an associate to call in the event of an emergency and I’m starting to feel that this pain is an emergency.
