Have you ever developed a food allergy after eating it many times?

9 comments so far

I've eaten grapefruit plenty of times throughout my 22 years.

A couple months ago, I ate a grapefruit for breakfast for the third time that week and all of a sudden broke out horribly. Went to the doctor and turns out I developed an allergy and had to get a shot in my butt.

This ever happened to anyone else?

That happened to my dad with kiwis. He used to eat them all the time, and then one day, his throat just swelled shut and had to go to the hospital.

Yes. Chocolate makes my skin itch.

My mom swears she is allergic to chicken now. Also, my uncle can't eat regular tomatoes anymore. He can only eat organic heirloom tomatoes or he breaks out.

All of my life I loved apple juice… and then I randomly became allergic to it.

All of my mom's life she loved tomatoes, and now she is allergic.

    It's a bummer, but true.

Yes! This happened to me with seafood. I have eaten seafood many times until the day I became short of breath, broke out in a rash, had explosive diarrhea. As a nurse, I knew this was an allergic reaction. In researching how allergies occur, I found that sometimes our bodies need several exposures of the allergen for our body to say this isn't acceptable to our system. I have also experienced allergies to certain foods after surgery. In my case - mangos and purple grapes. Go figure!

Yes! A person can become allergic to anything at anytime…after even multiple exposures. Grapefruit and other citrus are can also make our systems become photo-sensitive, (direct sunlight) when combined with other factors.

Did you take any medication while injesting grapefruit?

Also, wash all produce before injesting it. Pesticides are on everything.

    Best,
    Terri

yes my son. he has eaten strawberries for a few years and all of a sudden 2 weeks ago he broke out head to toe and turned into a beet ( color wise) he had to be given bendadryl and prednisone and a 2 week supply of prednisone. the EMS guy said allergies change over time. so something you may have only been just a little allergic too 2 years ago could now be a severe allergy.

I have had that issue with lotions and lipsticks that I have used for years and just developed allergies for. Your body and immune system changes over time and there are instances where you develop allergies for things you have enjoyed for years. There is also a possibility that there was a pesticide or preservative on the grapefruit and you were actually allergic to that and not the fruit. Always make sure you have benedryl on hand in case you do come across something you are allergic to so you don't get anaphylaxis (severe reaction that could lead to death).

lately I have enjoyed daily grapefruit . Now I suffer from extreme dermatitis on my legs/ankles. very itchy, I’m told it is NOT psoriasis. stopping the fruit, but is there any other advice? I have no family doctor.
