How long do puppies sleep for?

13 comments so far

Hi

I've just got a new puppy. He's been to the vets and is healthy and happy >ut he seems to sleep an awful lot. It's quite a relief as I'm tired from the early morning loo trip etc but I wanted to check it's normal. I'm sure he's still settling in and that it is mentally exhausting for him to be in a new home but what is the average time a dog/puppy sleeps for in a day.

when i first got my puppy she was 8 weeks old and slept ALOT. She is now 14 weeks old and it seems like she takes several naps at night and a few during the day. So I wouldn't worry too much.

Once you put them to sleep they don't wake up again. So, it's better to just let sleeping dogs lie.

i'd guess puppy's would sleep alottt

when I got my cat at 7 weeks he would fall asleep while he was cleaning himself and stay asleep for hours

so I would guess that a very young puppy would sleep most of the day but i'm not positive

Some puppies need more sleep than others, I've only actually seen my Border Collie pup sleep once during the day and that was for 20 minutes, he has lots of energy!!!! Puppies go from periods of excitement to periods of total exhaustion all within the space of an hour.

If the vet is happy that your pup is healthly I think you can rest assured that you have a content pup who just needs lots of sleep :)

Puppies race around at 100mph checking out new smells, playing games, seeing people. If you did that - you'd sleep a lot as well!!!

Don't worry - he is only a baby, and needs his sleep as much as human babies! Just make sure you are feeding him the recommended amounts of food, and enjoy the fun! And allow him to sleep when he wants to sleep - don't let children wake him etc.

Puppies do often sleep for such a long period of time. But it's okay, because you know, they are babies too. So they will sleep-in basically the whole day. They will often wake up and play for a few minutes then go back to sleep. But then it depends how old is the puppy?
