How many hours of sleep a day should an adult be getting?

13 comments so far

I am 20 years old and in college, and I usually get around 5 hours of sleep a night because I am really busy during the day. How much sleep should a person get and not reduce life expectancy? I want good grades in school, but not at the expense of years of my life. I get conflicting answers: some people say 6-9, 6-8, 7-9, and 7-8 hours of sleep a night. So which is the right answer on how much sleep should a person who loves their life should get?

7 or 8 hours

No less then six hours and you really don’t need more than 8 hours.

At least seven. Eight or better is ideal.

Watch out for chronic insomnia. There are growing suspicions that cancer is linked to prolonged sleep-deprivation.

The right amount of hours is 8,but you will be ok with 6 or 7 while you are in class and must be at night, because during the day is not the same.

8hrs is the best but you could do less(say 6) if once a week you had a longer time asleep(say 10 to 12)

7-9 is healthy, but most adults get 6-8.
    7-9 hours is much better.

Im 16. I get about 12 hours of sleep. Which I need to be able to get through the day. This is considered ABOVE AVERAGE of how much i should be sleeping. I should be at 8-10 hrs. With this being said. Everyone is different… For adults 7-9 hours is completely right. But if you are able to manage throughout the day easily with 5 hours of sleep and no “Energy pills/drinks/coffee” you are just one of the lucky few who can get away with 5 hours of sleep per day. If you really are worrying about this that much. Ask a doctor they know much more than me or anyone else who answers this.

It’s anywhere from 6-9. Most people say the average is 8. It depends on the person. You are the best judge of how much sleep you need. Personally, I can go on anywhere between 6 and 9. Anything below 6 and I feel nauseous, and my attention span is poor. I’m lethargic during the day and by 3 PM I want nothing more than to sleep. So, if you can get by on 5 and not feel groggy, tired, sleepy, lethargic or have impaired attention span during the day, then maybe 5 is ok for you. Also, some people sleep 5 hours a night and then take a 2 hour nap during the day. See what makes you feel best. I’m sure you could cut out some time out of your busy schedule to get adequate rest if you had to.

if you love your life, sleep just 7 hours. especially if your in college, with all those all nighters and stuff. but honestly, studies put a group of college students awake all day till 4 am, and wake up 8-9 am in the morning…
they did a variety of tests on the co mputer like typing in repetitive numbers with the opposite hand they write with. they were then asked how they feel after a week. they all said …”um…uh…i..”…”i think…pauses.***im used to it definitely” people say you get used to being tired. if so no one would say their tired. we mean we’re used to waking up tired and getting up at a certain time. The other group of people had a good nights of sleep but didnt have as much practice as the first group on the computer tests. but they scored higher.

i think we should sleep a good 7 hours. stop procrastinating, do our daily goals, then our sleeping pattern wont get screwed over.

and the more u sleep the more tired you get. If one were to sleep too much, they 1) arent getting enough nutrients in their body for that day 2) arent getting as much excercise 3) longer you sleep in, the longer it takes for you to fall asleep at 9 10 pm. i used to sleep till 3 pm in the afternoon but couldnt sleep till 4-5 am. thats when i had fatigue, my body was not as strong so i was prone to get sick often. +got fat, cuz i ate more as my body was readjusting my time clock. when i would usually wake up at 8 am and eat breakfast im now eating at 330 pm. when im eating lunch im actually eating at 6 pm (dinner) and when dinner comes along imm eating it at night when im about to sleep.
