What are some ways to put a toddler to sleep?
7 comments so farI'm babysitting my 20 month old cousin who's super sleepy. He probably stayed up late last night too since it was his uncle's last night in town and he usually stays up as long as he wants. Its hard getting him to sleep most of the time. Sometimes he'll just lay on your shoulder and go to sleep. But thats only if he woke up early and didn't get enough sleep the night before
Usually you have to rock and sing him to sleep. But sometimes that takes hours.
What is a good way to put him to sleep…Fast?
gentle repetitive touching. like patting him on the back, or rubbing his forehead. also a soft song, a warm bath, a nice book.

A warm bath followed by reading a bed time story…works like a charm.

My daughter (whos 22months) gets a warm bath w/bedtime bubble bath, then I put her pjs on, sit her in front of me on the couch, then I brush her hair (i spray detangler first) it is very relaxing… I brush her hair for about 5 or even 10min sometimes how ever long she will allow it lol and then we lay on the couch on our sides I'm behind her, and put on a movie (brother bear, cars, flushed away, finding nemo are some of her favorites) be sure to turn out all the lights… shes usually out in 10 - 15 minutes, sometimes it might take 30 minutes…

At 20mths nursing them isnt good they need to be put to bed with a musical night time toy, and should learn to go off on their own, to start with we had 4 days of screeming but ever since that he goes straight off by him self.

I say a warm bath, read him a story, tuck him in, kiss him goodnight and then leave. At 20 months old (that's close to two years old) he should have already been taught to fall asleep without having to rock him to sleep for hours. That is what you do with an infant. If he cries, peek back in and say I love you, but let him cry. He has to learn at some point that he needs to go to sleep by himself and better now than when he's 6 or 7 and can't go to sleep unless he's rocked.

My daughter is 17mths and she goes to bed after her bath with her lullaby cd on. It always works!! We even brought it into hospital when she was ill to help her drift off in a strange place.
