What are the side effects of sleep deprivation? How much sleep should i have?

10 comments so far

I am 22, i work 40 hours a week, and i’m also taking 3 courses this semester. I have about 4-6 hours of asleep every night. Will i be developing any sleeping disorders if i have this much sleep a night. How many hours of sleep should i get for my age? What is healthy?

You should get a good 6-8 hours, however the quality of sleep is as important as how long.

Sometimes, when a person is under alot of stress, sleep can become irregular.

I had problems falling asleep, and was precscribed medication, and then I had heard about Stemulite, which is all natural health supplement. There is a daytime and nighttime formula that is a binary formula to help maximize the benefits.

In the nighttime formula, is an all natural ingredient by the name of melatonin, which helps you fall asleep deeply. This enables REM sleep, where a person can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on a new day.

I decided to just take straight melatonin, and it never worked as well as the Stemulite did, and that is in part of the manufacturing of Stemulite, which was made by a doctor.

I dont think so I use to not get much sleep either and I seemed to be ok. You should try on the weekend to sleep in and “catch up” because I think people that are sleep deprived can become irrational and irritated easily and little things like that. for the most part I’m sure that you will be ok. Keep going strong girly we need people like you that take their career and future seriously enough to not give up. Keep hustlin

Van Gogh believed in sleeping in short, multiple spurts throughout the day.
The experts say adults should be getting ideally between 6 and 8 hours each night. You can certainly function on 4 hours of sleep, but there have been studies done which show that after extended periods without sleep, a person’s brain shows identical symptoms to being DRUNK.

Also, they say that a good 45 minute nap is the perfect amount of time for a mid-day rejuvenation, so on the days that you are getting only 4 hours of sleep, if you can squeeze a nap in, you will do just fine.

    Good luck!

supposedly 8-10 hours a night of sleep. I believe 8 is the usual healthy one for an adult. so I think you’ll be fine.

im 16 and I get basically the same amount of sleep as you do. and im fine. albeit you have a job and im often dependent on coffee… but over all, no significant side effects.

Well, the docs say you should get 8 hours of rest every night, but I think that's a bunch of bullsh*t because it eats up a lot of time. To put it, your way is an excellent strategy of time management. Getting 4-6 hours is like the new 8 hours. The way I see it, the less sleep you get, the more time you have on your hands to get things done. Cutting out sleep to add more hours in a day is time leveraging, therefore you will be more productive. I know this from experience. Whenever I was still in college, I only got about 4 or 5 hours of sleep every night. I'm proud that I slept less because I was able to add more hours in my day to get more studying done and get my assignments done a lot quicker. Thanks to sleeping less, I was always one of the first people in my class to get assignments done, my work had excellent quality because I added more hours to my day to tweek projects, I got tasks done way early before the deadline impressing teachers and bosses, and I graduated with a 3.8 GPA, Magna Laude Honors. In order to keep my sanity, I became very dependent of caffeine drinking two cups of coffee everyday. So, if I slept eight hours every night, then I would have lagged behind on my school assignments, and my GPA would probably be ten points lower, and I would have never saved up to $8,000 to start paying off my loans early. Bottom line is that you're on the right track–get less sleep so that you'll get more done and keep working 40 hours a week to save money. That's how I did it. Best of luck to you.

7 hrs (people who sleep either more, or less, have lower life spans, on average). Sleep debt causes increased error, and accident rates, and can suppress the immune system, leading to illness.

You will not develop a sleeping disorder from your behavior, you are still getting an adequate amount of sleep. 6-8 hours of sleep is the norm, even though my psychology professor told us that 10 hours is how much a college student needs to stay on their toes without feeling tired at all during the day. If you continue to provide sleep for your body, but still not enough sleep, your body will have a “sleep debt”. What this means is that for every ounce of sleep your missing, your body will be ready to make up the missed hours the moment it has the chance. If you feel that 4-6 hours still isn’t enough for your body, make sure that you aren’t falling asleep within the first 5 minutes of hitting the sack, as this shows that your body is desperate for sleep.

In my experience…if I don’t get hardly any sleep, I have a hard time falling asleep. Being over-tired. But if you don’t get enough sleep you might find yourself getting sick more. 8 hours is supposted to be the min…but I think the older we get the less sleep we need.
