What is the best position to sleep in? Is there a "correct" way we as humans should sleep?

9 comments so far

I've always found myself wondering this. I sleep in the same position every night, and I find it difficult to sleep in any other.

I sleep on my stomach.
I want to compare and contrast between sleeping on stomach, back, or sides. Which is the best for our bodies so we won't have any strain in our backs or ribs.

Also, Is there a proven* correct way we should sleep?

Its best to lie on your left side. your right lung has three lobes, the left one only has two. When you lay on your left side it allows the lobes on the right to fully expand.

I don't remember what website I saw it on, but I read that the best position to sleep in is on your back, because everything is in a natural position.

When you lie on your stomach, it slightly "crushes" your internal organs (I couldn't think of a better word than crushes).

Lying on your right side is okay, but it kind of "crushes" the organs on your right side.

Lying on your left side is a little worse because your heart is included in the "crushed" organs.

So, the best position is on your back, then right side, then left side, and supposedly on your stomach is the worst.

However, I usually lie on my stomach, but I don't find it too extremely difficult to sleep on my back, and it feels better.

I heard that sleeping on your stomach isn't the best choice because you tend to get leg and rib problems. The safest way is to sleep on your back because your body is flat overnight and the food in your stomach isn't rolling around. But I personally find it easier to sleep on my right side.

So far there is not reported death caused by sleeping position, however, sleeping on your stomach was said to cause pressure to your stomach and other major organ. Sleeping on your back (flat) will cause your tongue to drop in your throat and can increase the probability of snoring due to soft palate/oropharynx to relax, and in the case of sleep apnea, to impede the flow of air to a degree ranging from light snoring to complete collapse. Or if you are unconscious, can cause death like what happen during Moscow siege. Based on that, the best would be sleeping at your side. But if you are healthy, who cares.

the best way to sleep and it’s proven by 33 percent of chiropractors in the US is on your left side. the way your body organs and right and left lungs are located, your left side is best to have the strain on.
p.s. my family owns a chiropractic center so my answer is bestttt!!!

uhhh who cares, sleep anyway you want! whatever feels comfortable to you, just sleep. what a dumb question. I live in the islands and could sleep on the sand everyday and not have a worry in my mind. but then again I am just living the life with nothin to worry about. ehhhh!!!! ;) sleep tight!

After reading the article above and the comments, i strongly believe that sleeping at the back is the best position.I ve slept in all the position mentioned here.I always discovered that if u r right hand person then sleeping on your left side will be common to u and the other way too.The worst position is to sleep at your left side and it is very dangerous.

Well, I normally sleep on my left or on my back. I sleep on my left cuz when they do the first aid lessons at school they put people on their left side with their tongue out and stuff. And on my back cuz that’s comfy. But the other two aren’t so comfy…well, for me at least.

    Hope that helped. :)
