How do you fight Depression naturally, and keep yourself from letting bad events pull you back down?
8 comments so farI have mild to sometimes moderate Depression. If it's ever severe and I feel suicidal, that's only for a few hours after a tragedy occurs and I believe that's quite a normal human way of acting or going about it. I also have anxiety but anxiety levels are common among virtually everyone. I treat my anxiety with some meds because that can get carried away, and honestly after dealing with shallow, immature, type-A personality Aholes in teh general society, I find it much easier to keep my sanity after popping a Valium. I know that sounds funny,but it's true and it works. People aren't worth your nerves.
However, I've tried many "depression" drugs and bipolar drugs which I thought I had and not only did they NOT work, but they produced more agitation/anxiety/alertness, and made me more jumpy. They also clouded the mind pretty slightly to moderately, and I just felt drugged, and had no clarity.
So I decided to fight it naturally, and take some OTC supps. But, bad events DO happen.
So how do we keep ourselves above water, when we have things happen like health problems/issues, life related problems, etc?
Our society is stressful and as you can see just from reading this board and meeting people in your daily lives, we have to deal with ALOT of crud.
This can pull us back into depression, or kill our happy balance equilibrium.
Without resorting to drugs, legal or illegal, or atl east a cocktail of them, it's always cool to take short term drugs like valium WHEN NEEDED,
how can we deal?
Exercize, positive attitude?
Believe me, today's times, many people don't have positive attitudes anymore!!!
It's tough especially in the NJ/NYC area.
I don't want to be another unhappy citizen, help!
Man ,you need good supportive family.Some one to give you unconditional love and to value you .OK,maybe the are no good ,then a dog is good.You can go for runs with them and boost your pheranomes.
You have to stop beating yourself up over other people.There a lot of inadquate types who can only make themselves feel good by putting you down. They need help (tho' they dont realise it.) so just smile kindly at them if they are being a holes ,because its their problem ,not yours .
Man ,you dont need pills to be terrific.You are .God has given you the world ,now use it,love it and be kind to others.Go slowly and smell the flowers

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Exercise is great, it was for me anyway, and still is. Im keeping depression at bay by exercising, but it also helps that I spend more time with my family. Friends are all well and good but when you discover as I did that some of them dont know how to handle the dark things you talk to them about, you can always rely on your family. I dont even have to talk about anythin in particular and my family will make me feel better just by being around them. I go to my grandparents when Im down to get away from whatever is bothering me, which is mainly the fact that my dad has been so ill over the last few years that he cant do anythin for himself and hasnt been able to speak for years. Figure out who you like being around and spend more time with them. Also decide how you might want to improve your body and do it. Loose weight, gain muscle, become faster, more flexible (that one isn't just for females, flexibility makes you faster and stronger).

There are lots of things, like exercise, sunlight, change in diet… but you have to be willing to know that some people actually need medications…. and there isn't anything wrong with that…

There are a few things:
Our diet. What we eat can do a number on us. Too many simple carbs–especially sugar–can give you highs, then a subsequent low. For some people, an intense concentration can create tenseness and anger.
Sleep. Not enough sleep makes you more emotionally reactive to things.
Exercise. Creates endorphins.
Our thoughts. We have a choice in what we think. We can decide to think better things, to let go of the things that aren't useful to us. It's normal to have all kinds of thoughts going through our heads. The key is to not let those that bring us down be the ones we latch onto.

I use something I learned several years ago called H.A.L.T.
The acronym stands for hungry, angry, lonely, tired. And this is what it means to me.
I tend to over engage myself with activities at times and forget to eat properly. If I don't eat I get depressed.
If I get angry with a person or a situation, it is important to resolve the anger before I move on or it will trip me up.
If I isolate to manage my activity, I become lonely, sad etc. Call a friend.
And last tired. If I drive myself without acquiring the proper amount of rest I wear down my system. Simple stuff but critical to a healthy sense of well being.

Watch or read the book THe Secret - it has all the answers - changed my life! It takes time - just like drugs take time to kick in and you have to do some work but in the end life is good and its worth living
