How to know if there is a diaper allergy?

3 comments so far

I was wondering how you know if your baby is allergic to a certain brand of diapers. DD is always very red on her butt and girl parts when I change her, sometimes even around her legs. She never seems bothered by it but I was wondering if it is normal or if it could be signs of a diaper allergy.

We use Huggies Gentle Care.

Well, I knew my son had a diaper allergy because he developed a rash around his waist. Obviously that wasn’t a typical “diaper rash”, so it was fairly clear that it was the diapers for him. If you think it could be a diaper allergy, try switching for a week or so, and if it improves you were probably right. We used to use pampers, but switched first to 7th generation, and now to cloth diapers (but still use 7th gen. at night).

It could just be diaper rash (have you tried using any creams?), but it doesn’t hurt to change brands to try it out. Good luck.

What can help me get rid of my wheat allergy?

5 comments so far

I've been trying to get rid of this allergy since I was 6, and jealous all my friends could eat pizza except for me. My choices of cuisine is very limited, and eating dinner everyday at my house is even worse.

Lets get to the point, what can help me get rid of this wheat allergy?

I've been growing stronger to wheat over the years, for example, 5 years ago I couldn't KFC without breaking in hives, but at the moment, I can eat 3 pieces of KFC with very little symptons.

First, you might want to find out if you are celiac or if it is actually a wheat allergy. If it is a wheat allergy then you only need to avoid wheat…if you are celiac you will need to avoid other glutenous grains.

From my experience, I find allergies can shift over time. I become less allergic to some things over time, but also develop new allergies.

If you're finding that your wheat allergy is improving, you might want to get a new allergy test done from time to time….but don't test this by consuming wheat.

A lot of allergies are permanent, however, so don't get your hopes up too much. There are a lot of great alternatives to wheat right now if you're willing to do some cooking :). Look for gluten-free and wheat-free recipes and flour mixes.

Lisapj: I agree with you about the Canola, but not all soya is genetically modified. If you visit a health-food store you will find products made from non-GMO soya beans.

How to i reduce the pain in my fingers?

3 comments so far

I've been overseas for a month and haven't played my guitar. This morning i was performing and experience such pain in the tips of my fingers. I know it's due to the fact that the callis (hard skin) has gone.

I have a performance in a couple of days and urgently need this pain to go. How do i go about this?

if you are a [ regular] player, you should not have this problem, even a month out, but you know the old saying, if you don't use it, you loose it ! try soaking them in alum……….

How many hours of sleep does someone with insomnia get?

4 comments so far

I know insomniacs have a hard time sleeping, but humans can't stay awake for too long before experiencing serious health problems or even death. How many hours of sleep do they get?

Apparantly now they say you should get between 6 and seven hours a night. Eight used to be the magic number. I've included the link to the scientific article below.

Personally, being an insomniac, I can tell you that is a really good question you asked. Here's to hitting the pillow!!!

What kind of foods can you make when you have a milk allergy?

7 comments so far

My youngest son (13 months) has a milk allergy, anything with a little bit of milk makes him sick. What do I feed him. Everything seems to have milk in it. Any ideas?

My son has the milk allergy, among others, and that was a difficult age. Yes, ENRICHED soy milk and ENRICHED rice milk are your friends. You can pretty much prepare anything for him from scratch as long as it does not contain milk. Most vegetables and meat don't really contain milk. He can also get calcium from the calcium added OJ these days.

But you pretty much have to avoid prepared foods and watch out for foods that may have undeclared milk like deli meat and sausages (in the casing) - even canned tuna. Also, be particularly aware of the so-called vegan stuff. We had a trip to the emergency room because of some vegan cheese. There is nothing resembling cheese your kid can eat so I wouldn't even try, even if the labels say they don't contain milk they may contain caesin, a milk protein.

For margarine Fleischmann's unsalted doesn't contain milk (but only the unsalted) and there are some Duncan Hines box cakes and frostings that don't contain milk that we have used (but be sure to read the labels). We also instituted a label policy at that age where neither of us would buy any food item unless the other read all the ingredients. It was hard.

Check out the food allergy network web page. They also sell an allergy free cookbook.

How long should you have pain after a herniated disk?

7 comments so far

I had surgery for a herniated disk at L4-5 last February. I'm still off work because of pain & difficulty sleeping. I've been looking for work in my field in the last few months with no luck so far. During a blizzard & cold snap this week my pain has really increased. Last night I only slept for 5 hrs & then only dosed off after that. How long have others been struggling like this after herniating a disk?
I had surgery last February, as stated in the original post. The gel from the disk was removed at that time.

Hello =)

I had a herniated disc when I was 18 years old. Surgery was not an option because of my weight, and that it was L-1 - 2.

I did "recover" through physical therapy, and physical posture re-education. Weather related inflammation and "flare-ups" due to activity continue to this day (25 years later).

Sorry I don't have better news for you. I think you are looking at a lifetime of anti-inflammatories, and perhaps opiate pain killers, the same as most of us…… Eventually, you find a balance, and can learn what activities, and how much are acceptable to your body.

You may never be able to return to your field of work, depending upon what it was……

Employers, also, will discriminate against you, because you are a significant health insurance liability. You need to be "symptom free" for several years before employers ignore this problem completely, unfortunately. When you answer the question "Have you been hospitalized within the last 2 years?" you are providing them the information needed to discriminate against you, and if you lie, they will find out, as soon as their insurance company pulls your medical records, and you will likely be fired. It is not that they are trying to be malicious….they are merely looking out for themselves….

It will all work out OK in the end, but you need to start thinking of yourself as being among the "marginals" of society, and no longer part of the mainstream "employer/employee" model……..

Namaste,

–Tom

1 comment so far

I have some subluxation in my neck and my lower back is curved to the left a little. I usually sleep on my stomach or on my side but I think this is causing the problem. Is there something I can wear while I sleep or sleep on to improve this.

it seems you turn rounding while sleeping, now tie your legs and hands to the bed while sleeping, you will not be able yo turn.

Hi Bob
I use to keep my husband awake at night scratching myself, he thought he was on a massage bed the bed was always moving. I use to bandage myself up Bob it was ssssoooooo bad I would bleed on the sheets and ooze I know it sounds disgusting the reason I am telling you this is so you can know I really have been there, the allergy then started attacking my lungs and I developed etaceria which is a allergy inside the body I removed all colorants and preservatives from my diet Bob, drank water and tried to eat as many fresh fruit and veggies as possible of course still steak, chicken etc as well. I have not scratched it 3 years if I go on a eating binge and eat all sorts of rubbish it is back in 48hours so I KNOW it is definitely the food. I hope this really helps you guys Bob good luck!

How do I become better at handling pain?

1 comment so far

The last time I got period the first stomach cramping felt like the end of the world, even though I've been menstruating for more than 4 yrs. Whenever I am having any kind of pain, it seems to consume my attention and I can't eat comfortably, which causes other problems. But when the pain is gone, I am normally happy again. I know that pain goes away when you stop thinking about it, but that is so hard! How do I become better at this?

And also, is slight diarrhea a common symptom during menstruation?

If you're rather young (which it seems you are), it can take awhile for your body to get used to menstrual flow. When the cramps FIRST start, it can be from a "back-up" of blood (the tissue swells and makes a duller pain), so use a heating pad. This will get the blood flowing. After that, for sharp pain, use aspirin, if you can, since it reduces chemicals known as "prostoglandins", that cause pain. They're present in semen, so if you're sexually active, you would want to have your partner use a condom before and while (if you do that, some people do) you're menstruating.

(btw, yes, diarrhea IS often present during menstruation, but tends to go away as you get a bit older).

If your blood flow is too heavy, try lying still for a few hours, with an ice pack on your lower abdomen. Remove it after 20 mins., to avoid skin damage, then put it back after your skin warms up.

If your problem continues, see your gynecologists for some tests, as cramps CAN be signs of more serious problems (like endometriosis). But it sounds like you just have regular cramps, awful as they are. Your gyn may ask if you want to try oral contraceptives, to give you a break. That's your decision and remember there ARE risks, so only choose the lowest dose.

There are other natural remedies for cramps. According to an article on about.com:

"Supplementing your diet with zinc and calcium has been found to reduce cramps, bloating, and related PMS symptoms.

Herbal remedies such as Viburnum prunifolium, Scutellaria spp., and Cimicifuga raemosa have an antispasmodic effect that may reduce some menstrual cramps. Other useful herbs include cramp bark, squaw vine, unicorn root, bromelain, evening primrose oil, and blue cohosh. "(1)

You should be careful with straight progesterone, though, as it can cause terrible headaches and possibly, uterine cancer, later in life.

But the main cure will be time! They should ease as you get older.

How to develop a sleep pattern for an 8 week old newborn?

15 comments so far

My little son has been eating every 2 hours (not even 2 hours and 1 minutes) since he was born, including the nights. I breastfeed during the day and pump then bottle feed during the night. He does not cry or wake up, but he is just hungry. He resumes his sleep right after he’s full. Still, I have to get up and spend at least half an hour for 4 times a night. Can you suggest how to develop a sleeping pattern so he will eat only once a night? Thanks!

He will have his own schedule until he is old enough to change it!! Meaning, no matter what you do, until he decides to only eat once a night, then you”ll just have to do what you have to do. Babys are NOT scheduled little humans….they are demanding. Both of mine didnt sleep through the night until they were well over 4 months old.

Is it possible to have a allergy to yogurt?

5 comments so far

I've noticed that after I eat yogurt my face starts to itch. It is usually with the peach or strawberry yogurt. I've stopped eating yogurt but is it really possible to have an allergy to it?

It's possible. If there are artifical flavorings, preservatives, or coloring, that are in the brand you buy, they could be the cause of itching.

What does cramping and back pain in between your periods mean?

5 comments so far

I had on period that was 3 weeks late. Then my next two were a couple days early. In between my last period and this one (around the middle of my cycle) I had two different days, about a week apart from each other that I had bad cramping and back pain. No bleeding. Then my period came 3 days late. I have never been regular, but this pain in between is not normal for me. What could be causing this? I'm not pregnant.

Assuming you aren't pregnant (which causes similar discomfort), you're probably ovulating. Occurs in mid cycle typically & feels similar to mild period cramps/discomfort or pms symptoms & can also cause spotting.

Another possiblility is polycystic ovary/ovarian syndrom or PCOS. Pretty common (I have it, several aquaintances/friends do also!) & can be mildly to extremely painful & dabilitating from occurrence to occurrence. This can cause you to spot, too, when the cyst(s) erupts.

Go here for some info on this:

Regardless, you should see your gyn!

How do you get baby to sleep without nursing without tears?

3 comments so far

So I have the No Cry Sleep Solutions and I have been doing he gentle removal plan. We have been making progress, most nights she pulls herself off an rolls overand goes to sleep. I used to have to let her lay in my lap for awhile but now I put her in her crib immediately. Sometimes she'll open her eyes and then close them and go back to sleep. But what now? I would like to move her nursng to earlier in her bedtime routine. How can I do this without tears?

I have no idea. If you feel like you really need her to sleep without crying or nursing, then keep trying. My personal feelings are that as we evolved as humans and were living in the wild, we couldn't have let babies cry it out and we would have been so exhausted that we would have always just nursed them to sleep. There are some cultures that still do this. I feel like our bodies were designed to nurse to sleep and during the night and that there is nothing wrong with it. Our culture is strange in the way moms are made to feel like we have to make our babies fall asleep on their own and sleep through the night. I've even had people tell me that nursing her down and through the night will cause a sleep disorder, but the cultures who do that don't have sleep disorders and I haven't seen any scientific study that says that it will cause a sleep disorder. So I nurse my 22 month old to sleep and let her nurse during the night when she wants and it works for us and it is great. I also have friends who have night weened their kids (same age as mine) and when their kids wake up at night they gently help them fall back to sleep using other methods and they are happy to do things that way. Personally, I need my sleep and for the most part I sleep through the nursing so we are just going to keep on doing what we are doing. I hope you aren't feeling pressure by family or friends to change what you are doing. It will work best if it is something that you want to do and feel good about doing.
